Pattern-recognition receptors structure

Other pathogen-associated molecules called PAMPs, for pathogen-associated molecular patterns, have been recently described (Jeannin et ah, 2002). These highly conserved structures are recognized by innate cells. Recent evidence shows that this recognition can mainly be attributed to non-clonally distributed receptors called pattern-recognition receptors, or PRRs,... [Pg.260]

Most olfaction models in the literature are far too simplistic and too mechanical in nature, and none of them have succeeded in accounting for all of the observations about olfaction. As described, recent advances in our understanding have confirmed that odor perception, as predicted by Polak (19), starts with a combinatorial mechanism at the receptor level (1) and involves pattern recognition in the higher brain (4). No single odorant-receptor interaction will be the sole determinant of odor percept, and even knowledge of the pattern elicited at the olfactory bulb is insufficient to enable prediction of the cortical image of odor. Therefore, structure/odor models are and, for the foreseeable future, will remain statistical tools rather than mechanistic indicators. [Pg.1366]

Antagonists - Recent structure-activity studies of Hj -receptor antihistamines have been concerned with stereochemical aspects, partition characteristics, pattern recognition, affinity contributions to activity and association phenomena. The subject has also been reviewed recently. Undoubtedly, the main focus of attention has been on the H2 receptor histamine antagonists. Three compounds have been widely studied, viz. burimamide (13b), metiamide (13c) and cimetidine (13d), and their pharmacological properties summarized. 3 Their discovery and development at SK F was the culmination of a research programme initiated in 1964. The search for an antagonist and some of the medicinal chemical approaches used in the structure-activity analysis have been outlined in several articles. Concurrently, other researchers had sought... [Pg.94]
