Patterns Matching

Regular expression patterns are delimited by forward slashes. The simplest ones contain a sequence of normal characters that must match somewhere within the body of a string. The EcoR I-site detector is one such example. Regular expressions are much more powerful than this, however. For example, square brackets can be used to specify a set of alternative characters in the manner shown here  

This pattern matches a sequence of characters begirming with GGG, followed by any of the characters G, A, T, or C, followed by the sequence CCC. In other words, this pattern searches for GGGNCCC. 

To search for a series of alternative patterns, you can use the I symbol to separate the alternatives. For example, this will search for either EcoR 1 sites or Hind 111 sites  

This facility is greatly enhanced by metacharacters and quantifiers. A metacharacter represents a whole class of characters. For example, a single dot (.) will match any character except the end of a line, whereas d signifies any digit. There

Other cell variables such as sound speed and heat capacities can be calculated using similar techniques. Some codes allow a variety of multimaterial element thermodynamic treatments. For example, CTH allows all materials in an element to have the same or different pressures or temperatures [44], Material interfaces in multimaterial elements do not coincide with element boundaries, as shown in Fig. 9.14 [45]-[49]. The interfaces must be constructed using pattern matching or some other technique.

Extraction of the most relevant parts of a process trend requires pattern matching of features that arise from the same physical phenomena, and are qualitatively identical. Matching of qualitatively identical features allows comparison of the qualitative and quantitative features at each scale in an organized, hierarchical manner, and helps fight the curse of dimensionality.

Sample B provided platinum crystallites that were analyzed by both EDS and MAED. MAED of several 3 nm crystallites shows a wide variation of orientations with respect to the electron beam, however, many of the patterns match (111) and (110) orientations. An example of the MAED patterns observed Is shown In Figure 2. The diffraction pattern was made with a 25 pm objective aperture at a camera length of 2 m.

Selection of the form of an empirical model requires judgment as well as some skill in recognizing how response patterns match possible algebraic functions. Optimization methods can help in the selection of the model structure as well as in the estimation of the unknown coefficients. If you can specify a quantitative criterion that defines what best represents the data, then the model can be improved by adjusting its form to improve the value of the criterion. The best model presumably exhibits the least error between actual data and the predicted response in some sense. 

Higher levels of inference depend on the truth conditions of the first level antecedent conditions, and thus higher levels of inference involve pattern matching and chained-inference logic. Higher level inference is done in the LISP processor, using various expert system paradigms, while the first level antecedents, which are computationally intensive, are evaluated in the parallel 68010 processor.
