Patrick principle

Patrick principle The principle that the quality of a body of water and the changes caused by human activities on that water can be determined by the type and number of organisms found there. The principle is named after microbiologist Ruth Patrick, perc An abbreviation for a commonly used dry cleaning fluid, perchloroethylene. [Pg.215]

Nonhierarchical methods such as that described by Jarvis and Patrick (61) have been widely used for compound selection from large databases (62). The principle behind the Jarvis-Patrick method is to group together compounds that have a large number of nearest neighbors in common. However, the... [Pg.206]

It is a pleasure to thank Patrick Fowler for reading most of the manuscript at a point when I thought it was close to completion. His comments both of detail and of principle have been most helpful in making the work much more comprehensible than it might have been. However, quite a lot of work was done since his reading so, even more than usual, I must ewlmit to responsibility for remaining faults. [Pg.387]

Chapter 1 by W. Patrick Walters from Vertex presents a practical guide to the generation and evaluation of predictive models. It emphasizes common pitfalls in model building and assessment and shows how to avoid them. Many practical examples are provided including source code, which results in an instractive and much needed contribution. In Chapter 2 by Ajay Jain of the University of California at San Francisco, computational methods and models are considered from a principal point of view. The argument is made—and well supported—that the success of computational models often depends on the incorporation of sound physical principles (termed physical reality), although their consideration inevitably also introduces approximations. A number of well-selected methodological examples are presented. [Pg.472]

The principle of non-discrimination in art. 2 UDHR is highly relevant for minorities. Although it protects on the individual level, it also means that the majority cannot have more rights than the minority. Non-discrimination was deemed sufficient to protect minorities, but as Patrick Thomberry has argued the principle of non-discrimination is only a first step in the protection of minorities, but is not sufficient in itself to deal with the question. History has proven him right. Since the UDHR was adopted in 1948, minority rights have been articulated and specified in declarations and treaties. [Pg.72]
