The result, if the damage is extensive, is liver failure and possibly death. The hver is so critical to the body that when its function becomes compromised, other parts of the body are affected. For example, the brain will be affected by the excess ammonia which builds up as it is not removed by the liver, and the patient may suffer convulsions and fall into a coma and the blood won t clot properly as the clotting factors are made in the liver. Fortunately, research in the USA carried out on experimental animals, and then in human patients, led to an understanding of how paracetamol is toxic to the liver and to the development of a successful antidote, Parvolex. [Pg.53]

Parvolex ) is used a MUCOLYTIC agent, which reduces the viscosity of sputum, so can be used as an expectorant in patients with disorders of the upper respiratory airways, such as chronic asthma and bronchitis. It is also used orally to treat abdominal complications associated with cystic fibrosis, and locally in the eye to increase lacrimation and mucus secretion. It is also used intravenously as an antidote in paracetamol poisoning. [Pg.4]
