Palpitation ephedrine

Moclobemide increased the pressor effect of ephedrine in healthy volunteers, who also had more adverse effects including light-headedness and palpitation (SEDA-18, 16). Thus, moclobemide can potentiate the effect of indirect sympathomimetics such combinations should be used with caution. [Pg.88]

In New Zealand, herbal ecstasy is a term used for many different herbal formulations, none of which contains ecstasy. Some of the names for these herbs (which can be sold in stores) include The Bomb , Reds , and Sublime . Analysis of The Bomb showed substantial amounts of ephedrine the Ministry of Health in New Zealand removed it from the market. Some symptoms associated with herbal ecstasy include headache, dizziness, palpitation, tachycardia, and raised blood pressure. Thus, in countries where the term herbal ecstasy is commonly used, it is important that those who see patients who have taken herbal ecstasy should not confuse it with ecstasy, as toxicity and medical management may be quite different (133). [Pg.610]

Many cases of serious adverse effects and even fatalities have been reported that were linked with ephedra or ephedrine administration over the last 10 years. Haller and Benowitz published a review of 140 reports of adverse events related to the use of ephedra alkaloids that were submitted to the FDA between June 1997 and March 1999. Using standardized rating system for assessing causation, 31% of the cases were considered to be definitely or probably related to the use of ephedra alkaloid-containing supplements, and another 31% were deemed to be possibly related. Among these adverse events, 47% involved in cardiovascular symptoms and 18% involved the CNS. Hypertension was the most frequent adverse effect, followed by palpitations, tachycardia, or both stroke and seizures. Ten events led to death and 13 cases produced permanent disability. [Pg.1037]

Palpitations might occur with ephedra herbal therapy (which offers an energy boost and weight loss). Ephedra, known as ma huang, contains ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, a stimulant that causes bronchodilation... [Pg.83]

The herbal dietary supplement ephedra, commonly known as mahuang, is used as an energy boost and for losing weight. Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine are components of ephedra that have a stimulant and bronchodilation effect. However, ephedra has an adverse effect of palpitations—which can result in stroke. [Pg.153]

No interaction was seen in subjects taking brofaromine 75 mg twice daily for 10 days when given 75 mg of slow-release phenylpropanolamine (Acutrim Late Day), but immediate-release phenylpropanolamine in gelatin capsules caused a 3.3-fold increase in pressor sensitivity. The pressor effects of high-dose oral ephedrine (two doses of 50 mg with a 4-hour interval) in 11 healthy subjects taking moclobemide 300 mg twice daily were increased about three to fourfold, and this resulted in an increase in palpitations and headache. ... [Pg.1147]

Ephedrine is a molecule found in the dietary supplement ephedra, which has been linked to adverse health reactions such as heart attacks, strokes, and heart palpitations. The use of ephedra in dietary supplements is now banned by the FDA. [Pg.39]

If used for therapeutic purposes with dose control, ephedrine has no potential toxicity. However, the toxicity of this amine may be expressed in overdosages, which can lead to paranoid psychosis, delusimis, and hallucinations [20]. Large doses of ephedrine may cause hypeitensimi, headache, dizziness, palpitations, vomiting, nervousness, and insomnia [12]. [Pg.1227]
