Palmer s personal assistant since 1912, Joseph Guffey, became the APC s director of sales. In December 1922, Guffey was indicted for embezzling he used APC trust funds as personal loans. Coben writes in his footnote Guffey s indictment was later quashed under suspicious circumstances, and he served in the U.S. Senate for Pennsylvania from 1935 to 1947.
