Automotive Refinish Paints. Paint for appHcation to automobiles after they have left the assembly plant is a significant market. Although some of this paint is used for fuU repainting, especiaHy of commercial tmcks, most is used for repairs after accidents, commonly just one door or part of a fender, and so forth. In order to be able to serve this market, it is necessary to supply paints that match the colors of aH cars and tmcks, both domestic and imported, that have been manufactured over the previous ten years or so. Repair paints for the larger volume car colors are manufactured and stocked, but for the smaller volume colors formulas are suppHed by the coatings manufacturer to the paint distributor that permit a reasonable color match for any car by mixing standard bases. [Pg.358]

Isocyanates (RNCO) are industrially relevant compounds which find application in several fields [9, 106]. Many isocyanates serve as the starting materials for the manufacture of plant protection agents, pesticides, dyes, resins and plastics, textile waterproofing agents, detergents, bleaches, and adhesives. They are also widely used in surface coatings such as paints, sealants and finishes, and in the manufacture of rubbery plastics such as those used to coat wires. Traditionally, diisocyanates are the primary feedstock for the production of polyurethanes. The global market for diisocyanates in the year 2000 was 4.4 million tonnes, of which 61.3% was methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), 34.1% was toluene diisocyanate... [Pg.148]

BASF s BASIL process [15] and the Dimersol process [16] have both been commercialized. The former uses the ionic liquid as a phase transfer catalyst to produce alkoxyphenylphosphines which are precursors for the synthesis of photoinitiators used in printing inks and wood coatings. The imidazole acts as a proton scavenger in the reaction of phenyl-chlorophosphines with alcohols to produce phosphines. The Dimersol process uses a Lewis acid catalyst for the dimerization of butenes to produce Cs olefins which are usually further hydroformylated giving C9 alcohols used in the manufacture of plasticizers. Several other processes are also at the pilot plant scale and some ionic liquids are used commercially as additive e.g. binders in paints. [Pg.5]
