In 2001 two Danish researchers, Asbjorn Hrobjartsson and Peter Gotzsche, published an influential meta-analysis in which they estimated the difference between the effects of getting a placebo versus doing nothing at all.14 Although they found a significant placebo effect, especially in the treatment of pain, the overall effect seemed very small - much smaller than would have been expected of a powerful treatment. On the basis of these data, the researchers asked Is the placebo powerless and answered their own question by concluding that there was little evidence that placebos have powerful clinical effects. 

Later in the seventeenth Century Peter Pain, a French descendant of the Pain Family, moved to Bow Bridge to join the London arm of the family. During this period customers for Pains gunpowder included Charles II and James II. 

This horticultural extravaganza immediately followed an ecstatic run downhill on skis. I explained to my old friend and crony, Peter Thompson, that my first run was so painfully awkward that I was hesitant to try again. But, as is often the case, I found my ski legs on the second run and I swerved, cut, jumped, and carved my way rapidly downhill through the soft spring snow. Peter said that he had not tried to ski in years but remembered our early adventures on the slopes together and asked me to take him with me again. I said, Sure. ...

Such life-and-death questions pondered from afar suddenly cut a lot closer to the bone in 1979, when Peter was diagnosed with testicular cancer. There was nothing academic about listening to his divorced parents argue over which doctor they should trust with their son s life—the one who advocated a series of major, painful surgeries, or the other who would rely primarily on a difficult course of chemotherapy. Each treatment had its own risks, upside, and downside. There were no guarantees just terrifying discussions of mortality rates and survival rates. And it was Peter who had to make the call in the end. He was fifteen years old.

The pain we feel in our ears when changing altitude is due to a pressure imbalance between the cavities within our ears and the ambient air. The greater number of molecular collisions on one side versus the other stresses the eardrum, resulting in pain.
