Paclitaxel biological actions

Structural diversity is not the only reason why natural products are of interest to dmg development, since they often provide highly selective and specific biological activities based on mechanisms of action. Two very good examples of this are the HMG-CoA reductase inhibition exhibited by lovastatin and the tubulin-assembly promotion activity of paclitaxel. These activities would not have been discovered without the natural product lead and investigation of their mechanisms of action. [Pg.93]
