Packed towers Power number

By far the greatest number of instaUations is for the removal or recoveiy of mostly small concentrations of acidic and other components from air, hydrocarbons, and hydrogen. Hundreds of such plants are in operation, many of them of great size. They mostly employ either packed or tray towers. Power requirements for such equipment are small. When the presence of solid impurities could clog the equipment or when the pressure drop must be low, spray towers are used in spite of their much larger size for a given capacity and scrubbing efficiency. [Pg.2110]

The most useful measure of the separating power of packed towers is the HETP, the height equivalent to a theoretical plate or stage. It is evaluated simply as the ratio of packed height used for a certain degree of separation to the theoretical number of stages. Packing characteristics. We have shown that the optimum steam rate that leads to minimum tower volume and minimum power is that of the ideal cascade (13.14). The optimum typ>e of packing, optimum pressure, and optimum vapor velocity is that which makes the expression in braces (1327) a minimum. We shall not attempt to evaluate a number of types of packing, but shall use Spraypak no. 37 packing as an example of the selection of optimum vapor velocity and pressure.
