The following series of steps was performed for each stoppered culture test in order to obtain a plot of specific oxygen usage as a function of oxygen concentration. The 02 concentration at each time was converted to total millimoles N02 of 02 in the headspace. In each test, a suspension culture of A. annua was flushed with a gas mixture of known composition, then sealed and placed on a rotary shaker. The gas headspace was sampled at several hour intervals the measured concentrations from all the tests were used to calculate the 02 consumption and C02 production rates.

In this paper the items of equipment considered as a "system are a series of vacuum insulated piping sections including valves, tees, elbows and straight sections. Each system component is evacuated and sealed. SI insulation and a new type of joint between component sections are used to minimize heat leak. The system is suited to liquid nitrogen and oxygen usage as well as for liquid hydrogen or helium. 

While there are quite accurate ways to measure metabolic heat generation by measuring oxygen usage, generally, the metabolic rate for an activity can be obtained from standard tables. 

This formula allows the oxygen usage of any fuel cell system of given power to be calculated. If Vc is not given, it can be calculated from the efficiency, and if that is not given, the figure of 0.65 V can be used for a good approximation.
