The force measured by its definite action at any one part of a circuit cannot perform more than one equivalent proportion of work at any other part of the same circuit. The only electrolyte which yielded was the sulphate of soda, the ions of which, however, were not the acid and alkali of the salt but an anion composed of an equivalent of sulphur and four equivalents of oxygen, and the metallic cathion sodium from the former, sulphuric acid was formed at the anode by primary action and the evolution of one equivalent of oxygen and from the latter, soda at the cathode by the secondary action of the metal and the evolution of an equivalent of hydrogen. ... [Pg.130]

Constitution. Pelletierine behaves as a secondary amine and the oxygen atom of the alkaloid is present in the form of an aldehyde group, since the base yields an oxime, convertible by the action of phosphorus pentachloride into a nitrile, b.p. 104-6°/13 mm., which is hydrolysed by caustic potash in alcohol to an acid, the ethyl ester of which is Loffler and Kaim s ethyl -2-piperidylpropionate. Pelletierine is not directly oxidisable to this acid. It also yields a liquid hydrazone, b.p. 130°/20 ram., which with sodium in alcohol at 136-70° reduces to dZ-eoniine. The oxides of nitrogen are somewhat sol in w, reacting with it in the presence of oxygen to form nitric and nitrous acids. This is the action that takes place deep in the respiratory system. The acids formed are irritants, causing congestion of the throat and bronchi, and edema of the lungs. The acids are neutralized by the alkalies present in the tissues, with the formation of nitrates and nitrites. The latter may cause some arterial dilation, fall in blood press, headache and dizziness, and there may be some formation of methemoglobin. Arterial blood pressure (afterload) is also reduced by propranolol. Although the mechanisms responsible for this antihypertensive effect are not completely understood, they are thought to involve (1) a reduction in cardiac output, (2) a decrease in plasma renin activity, (3) an action in the central nervous system, and (4) a resetting of the baroreceptors. Ethionamide (Trecator) is a derivative of isonicotinic acid and is chemically related to isoniazid. It is a secondary agent used in combination when primary agents are ineffective or contraindicated it is a bacteriostatic antituberculosis agent. Its exact mechanism of action is unknown but is believed to involve inhibition of oxygen-dependent mycolic acid synthesis. It is thought that mutations in the region of the (tnhA) gene that are involved in mycolic acid synthesis can cause both isoniazid and ethionamide resistance. [Pg.561]
