The molecular and solid systems described here represent an interesting class of compounds. [V 202(0H)2(S04)(2,2 -bipyridine)2j and [V 202(S04)2(2,2 -bipyridine)2] constitute the examples of fully reduced oxovanadium sulfate based hybrid materials with novel extended structures. Their preparations appear to be a significant step towards the development of V/0/S04/organic ligand systems and its potential in providing new materials. The inhibition of PTPs by vanadate is of particular interest since this mode of action is supposed to be the primary effect exerted by vanadium applied as an insulin-mimetic agent (see 5.1.1.5).
