The purpose of this article is the presentation of a summary of the contributions that have been made to our understanding of the gas phase photochemistry of the simple oxides and sulfides of carbon. An effort has been made to cover the published accounts of research in the English language literature through December 1974. 

Thus it seemed likely that others would find useful a summary of our present understanding of the photochemistry of some molecules of particular Interest to the author.
