Overview of operation

The behavior of the SEC RED is controlled by the redundancy mode, which can take two values isolated or redundant. When isolated, a single unit (e.g. the active one) runs the cyclic application process, and is authorized to implement permissive outputs. However, in redundant mode, both units active and passive) run the application process, and apply their binary wired outputs. However (mainly to avoid an unnecessary consumption of communication resources), only the active unit sends messages to remote devices. In this mode, it is essential to avoid inconsistent behavior or decisions between the two units. [Pg.435]

Moreover, whatever the mode, switching between active and passive must always be safe  [Pg.435]

To ensure safety, the application software must be executed during every cycle (at least on one unit) with fresh input and a correct application context The computed outputs must be applied to the cycle where they were computed. [Pg.435]

Too many firms focus upon the belief that the only responsibility of operations (manufacturing, formulation, packaging, labeling, etc.) is to make product. The role of operations goes well beyond this notion, and without this department s key involvement, repeatable product quality will be elusive. An overview of operations responsibilities is... [Pg.305]

In order to operate a process facility in a safe and efficient manner, it is essential to be able to control the process at a desired state or sequence of states. This goal is usually achieved by implementing control strategies on a broad array of hardware and software. The state of a process is characterized by specific values for a relevant set of variables, eg, temperatures, flows, pressures, compositions, etc. Both external and internal conditions, classified as uncontrollable or controllable, affect the state. Controllable conditions may be further classified as controlled, manipulated, or not controlled. Excellent overviews of the basic concepts of process control are available (1 6). [Pg.60]

While it is, of eourse, entirely possible to prediet expander-eompressor off-design performanee using modern eomputer software, tliere are a large number of variables to be eonsidered and it is not always easy to obtain a rapid overview. However, sereening smdies will benefit from graphieal metliods that allow tlie proeess designer to quiekly determine tlie expander and eompressor performanee over the enthe range of operation. [Pg.281]

The points that we have emphasized in this brief overview of the S l and 8 2 mechanisms are kinetics and stereochemistry. These features of a reaction provide important evidence for ascertaining whether a particular nucleophilic substitution follows an ionization or a direct displacement pathway. There are limitations to the generalization that reactions exhibiting first-order kinetics react by the Sj l mechanism and those exhibiting second-order kinetics react by the 8 2 mechanism. Many nucleophilic substitutions are carried out under conditions in which the nucleophile is present in large excess. When this is the case, the concentration of the nucleophile is essentially constant during die reaction and the observed kinetics become pseudo-first-order. This is true, for example, when the solvent is the nucleophile (solvolysis). In this case, the kinetics of the reaction provide no evidence as to whether the 8 1 or 8 2 mechanism operates. [Pg.269]

Addressing transportation risk at various life cycle stages can increase the inherent safety of the overall operation. For example, this may mean minimizing the number of railcars sitting on track within or outside the plant, selecting suppliers close to the plant, and so on. This chapter provides an overview of inherently safer concepts applied to transportation. [Pg.91]

Appendix III provides an overview of process economics. Two principal categories of expenditure are particularly important fixed and operating costs. The fixed cost ( ) can be distributed over the service life of the equipment as an annualized fixed cost ( /yr). The total annualized cost (TAC) of the system is given by... [Pg.26]
