Overseas assets

The costs to Britain of a long war were the loss of export markets, which were never wholly recovered, and a weakening of her financial power through the sale of overseas assets and the accumulation of debts. 

Lend-Lease. The price of Churchill s policy of victory at any cost was a weakening of British power, through the accumulation of sterling balances and the loss of overseas assets and markets, and consequent dependence upon the United States. 

The 18th ILCC was held in Sendai in 2000, the second time the conference was convened in Japan. There were 813 participants (354 from overseas and 459 from Japan). The number of presentations was 886 (4 keynote lectures, 3 memorial lectures, 26 invited lectures, 86 general lectures, and 767 posters). Because the structure for cooperation by the taxation system of the JSPS differed then from that in 1980, preparations for the conference advanced comparatively smoothly. Surplus funds were contributed to both the International Liquid Crystal Society and the Japanese Liquid Crystal Society (JLCS), established in 1997. The money contributed to the JLCS was effectively utilized as International Arts and Sciences Activity Assets based on the initial fund. 

Prior to September 11th, 2001 the private sector was well aware of the threat of terrorism. However, the terrorist threats they perceived were different than those perceived today. In the early 1990s, firms were mostly concerned about overseas employee kidnapping (Harvey 1993). Ports were more concerned with theft and smuggling (Thibault et al. 2006). Beyond airline hijackings, the use of supply chain assets as a method to inflict damage was far from the minds of corporate America.
