Overlayer preparations

The structures of SiO -matrix overlayers prepared by hydrolysis-polymerization of Si(OCH3) were confirmed by Si solid-state MAS NMR as shown in Fig. 22.6 [57]. The only surface species observed were and Qj silanols after the addition of approximately one monolayer of SiO to the nonporous surface (Fig. 22.6a). This means that the hydrolysis-polymerization occurs preferentially with surface-OH groups at the SiO surface. Upon increasing the amount of Si(OCHj), bulk species appeared (Fig. 22.6b-d). The large proportions of surface and Qj species indicate that the network of the surface SiO -matrix overlayers has a flexible structure with many Si-OFl groups, which is quite necessary for good imprinting [57]. [Pg.483]

PtO.25RhO.75 (100) alloy, and Pt/Rh(100) and Rh/Pt(100) bimetal surfaces underwent chemical restructuring at T > 400 K by heating in ca. 10" Torr of NO or O2, and the surfaces were covered with a common hybrid overlayer of Rh-O/Pt-layer. The Rh-O/Pt-layer gives a characteristic p(3xl) LEED pattern and is active for the reaction of NO + H2. As a result, Pt-Rh(lOO) alloy and Pt/Rh(100) and Rh/Pt(100) bimetal surfaces have almost equal catalytic activity. Pt(l 10) surface was poorly active compared to Pt(lOO) surface for NO + H2 reaction, but it was shown that Rh/Pt(110) and Rh/Pt(100) have almost equal catalytic activity. Therefore, it is concluded that a common Rh-O/Pt hybrid overlayer prepared by chemical restructuring is responsible to the prominent catalytic activity of the Pt-Rh catalysts for NOx reduction. [Pg.229]

Ferrous-aUoy-clad tube sheets are generally prepared by a weld overlay process in which the alloy material is deposited by welding upon the face of the tube sheet. Precautions are required to produce a weld deposit free of defects, since these may permit the process fluid to attack the base metal below the alloy. Copper-aUoy-clad tube sheets are prepared by brazing the alloy to the carbon steel backing material. [Pg.1074]

Expandable polystyrene EPS is a modified PS prepared as small beads containing pentane gas which, when steamed, expand to form lightweight, cohesive masses for forms used to mold cups and trays, package fragile products for shipment, etc. Similar dimensionally stable forms molded from EPS are used as cores for such products as automobile sun visors with surface overlays, etc. [Pg.427]

Fig. 4.2 (Left) XRD patterns (CuK ) of equally thick ZnSe (ca. 1 xm) deposits prepared on H (a) and on CdSe/Ni (b), at a deposition potential of -0.7 V vs. SHE from a typical acidic (pH 3) solution. The reflection intensities for ZnSe(l 11) are denoted in the figure (right) XRD patterns within the low-angle region showing the (111) reflections of ZnSe/CdSe heterostructures (A). Overlayers of ZnSe were deposited on CdSe films of various (111) texture intensities. The substrate features are shown in (B) in full-intensity scale. Evidently, the preferential orientation of the ZnSe crystallites increases with that of the CdSe substrate, up to a constant limiting value. Plaques may be obtained for animal viruses by using animal cell-culture systems as hosts. A monolayer of cultured animals cells is prepared on a plate or flat bottle and the virus suspension overlayed. Plaques are revealed by zones of destruction of the animal cells. [Pg.118]

Thus far we tacitly assumed that our EPR tubes were filled with pure, or at least to some extent purified, biomolecular preparations. However, what will we find when we try to measure, for example, whole cells In other words, how complex can a sample actually be without us losing track of all the overlaying signals What would be the dynamic range of signal amplitudes that we can resolve from a single sample ... [Pg.222]

The underpotential deposition (UPD) of metals on foreign metal substrates is of importance in understanding the first phase of metal electrodeposition and also as a means for preparing electrode surfaces with interesting electronic and morphological properties for electrocatalytic studies. The UPD of metals on polycrystalline substrates exhibit quite complex behavior with multiple peaks in the linear sweep voltammetry curves. This behavior is at least partially due to the presence of various low and high index planes on the polycrystalline surface. The formation of various ordered overlayers on particular single crystal surface planes may also contribute to the complex peak structure in the voltammetry curves. [Pg.141]

The idea of 9 having a maximum value of unity is simplistic. Try this quick experiment take the pan used to prepare a curry and try to wash it clean. There will be a stain adjacent to the metal, above which is a layer of curry sauce. The stain is thin - possibly even transparent - which we call the adsorbed layer. The layer of stain has a minimal thickness and it is difficult to remove. Conversely, we call the overlayers of curry sauce bulk material , which can take any thickness and are relatively easy to remove, even with a fingernail. [Pg.496]
