Outdoor life expectancy

The outdoor stability of EVA resins is superior to that of LDPE by virtue of their greater flexibility. Addition of UV stabilizers can extend the outdoor life of clear compounds to three to five years, depending on the degree of exposure. Outdoor life expectancy is also enhanced by the addition of carbon black. 

Plasticizer types and their different concentrations do not perform in the same manner. More volatile plasticizers give films with a shorter outdoor life expectancy. Clear films, containing UV absorber, plasticized at 50 phr were exposed in Florida. Four general purpose plasticizers were studied diisodecyl phthalate, DIDP, diisononyl phthalate, DINP, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, DOP, and heptyl nonyl undecyl phthalate, HNUP. Less branched and linear phthalate plasticizers (DOP and HNUO) performed very well for 36 months whereas two highly branched plasticizers (DIDP and DINP) were brown after 24 months of exposure. ... 

Polycarbonate (see Section 5.2.2.3) is used in applications similar to those of polymethyl methacrylate and is always used when high toughness, e.g., hail impact resistance and/or increased heat resistance are required. Other than PMMA, polycarbonate has to be protected for outdoor applications in order to meet outdoor service life expectations by the customer, e.g., in building construction. Figure 5.63 [68]. 

Since the disease is generally readily treated and since it can go into spontaneous remission (Table 2), an impact on professional life is only to be expected in severely affected patients with an outdoor occupation. One patient, however, had persistence of his disease for 48 years (Ive et al. 1965). 

In this work, we confirm the utility of using HALS and UVA stabihzers in tandem to provide the most cost effective solntion for a variety of pol5nner systems. Accelerated weathering can be a useful means of predicting expected outdoor lifetimes. However, caution must be exercised when extrapolating data to real-life conditions.
