Other Reinforcing Agents

A wide range of other reinforcing agents have been used to improve the mechanical properties of polymers. These include clays, calcium carbonate, silica, talc, alumina (see Table 2.6). [Pg.24]

PET (35-50%) Gears, sprockets, propellers, auto bumpers, auto ignition, auto exterior parts, water pumps, windscreens and auto wiper blades [50, 55-61] [Pg.25]

Epoxy resins Power transmission equipment, building products and pressure vessels [62, 63] [Pg.25]

PEEK (20-35%) Automotive applications [64], high stability components of structural housing [65] [Pg.25]

Polybutylene terephthalate (10-30%) Automotive distributor caps and engineering parts [Pg.25]

Other reinforcing agents either have been used to reduce the thermal degradation of polymers or do not have an effect on it. These include calcium carbonate in polyvinyl acetate [65,73] and polymethyl methacrylate [69,71] and titanium dioxide-magnesium oxide in polyethylene [78]. [Pg.159]

Rubber failure upon application of stress is delayed by i) viscoelastic energy dissipation and il) crystallization upon strain of the base polymer. A peculiar rubber failure, namely fatigue failure, is also affected by the same factors. The presence of carbon black or other reinforcing agents does not diminish the contribution of the base polymer on fatigue resistance. [Pg.233]

Reinforcing agents (CB, talc, silica, and other organic and fibrous filler)... [Pg.1037]

DeBolt, H.E. (1982). Boron and other high strength, high modulus, low density filamentary reinforcing agents. In Handbook of Composites, (G. Lubin cd.), Van Nostrand Reinhold, New York, pp. 171-195. [Pg.230]

Carbon is an important reinforcing agent for various elastomers. It is used in tires (71%) and other elastomers (22%). Miscellaneous applications (7%) include its use as a black pigment in inks and paints. [Pg.89]
