Among the other physicochemical studies mention should be made of the determination of the electron structure and energy of resonance carried out for a number of the principal 8-aza analogs, and of the determination of the dissociation constants and crystal structure. ... [Pg.251]

The exact nature of the lesion in DNA is unknown, and so is the type of DNA that is attacked. Recent X-ray crystallographic studies, as well as other physicochemical studies, have made it clear that DNA is not simply a polynucleotide, folded as Watson and Crick (106) proposed. There are three main conformational types of DNA they each keep the hydrogen-bonded bases in the center of the helix, but may tilt them by a "propellor twist," may slide them from the center of the helix in the plane of the base pairs, and may vary the amount of rotation from one base pair to the next up the helical axes. [Pg.164]

With the exception of l,6-naphthyridin-8-ols, nuclear hdyroxy-1,6-naphthyridines would be expected to exist as the corresponding naphthyridinones. This has been confirmed by infrared,1035 ultraviolet,1026 and nuclear magnetic resonance spectral means.639 Other physicochemical studies of these oxy-1,6-naphthyridines include IR stretching frequencies1019 and ionization constants1040 of 1,6-naphthyr-idin-8-ols the mass spectra of 1,6-naphthyridinones the effect of solvents on the UV spectrum of an 8-hydroxy-1,6-naphthyridine derivative 773 and X-ray analysis of the dilactam, 4-hexyl-3,4,4a,5-tetrahydro-l,6-naphthyridine-2,7(l//,6Z/)-dione (1), in connection with its crystallization as self-assembled hydrogen-bonded polymers.549... [Pg.115]

From fluorescence emission and other physicochemical studies strong evidence was obtained that unlike in the case of bovine erythrocuprein tryptophan was found in human erythrocuprein (204). In a comprehensive pulse radiolysis study Klug, Rabani and Fridovich (205) determined the rate constant of superoxide dismutase to be 2.3 X 109 M-1s 1. They confirmed the results of Rotilio, Bray and Fielden (182) who measured somewhat earlier a constant of 1.6 0.3 X 109 M-1s-1. Both groups were able to demonstrate the constancy of this rate constant in the approximate pFL region from 5 to 10. [Pg.55]

The chemistry of sulphur trioxide, to any large extent has not been studied in non-aqueous media. Compounds of sulphur trioxide with a few electron donors such as pyridine, dimethylamine, dimethylaniline, dioxane, acetic acid and butyric acid have been utilised for synthetic purposes without much attention having been paid to their structure and their solution chemistry. Based upon conductivity work the formation of compounds of sulphur trioxide with ethers (2) and fatty acids (3) has been briefly reported. These and other physicochemical studies such as potentiometric titrations, viscosity, density, dipole moment and molecular weight determinations have revealed in our work the formation of definite compounds of sulphur trioxide with alcohols, ethers, esters and fatty acids. [Pg.367]

The accumulating evidence from both theoretical and other physicochemical studies of p-lactam antibiotics points toward the importance of the reactivity of the p-lactam ring as one determinant of antibacterial activity. The relationship between reactivity and activity is seen in the structural data from X-ray analysis, in hydrolysis rate measurements, and in computer experiments on theoretical reactivity. [Pg.530]

Other authors have used dipole moments as an auxiliary technique to other physicochemical methods. Thus, Lumbroso has studied the tautomerism of 5-(p-aryl)tetrazoles in function of the substituent at the para position and compared the results with those obtained by NMR spectroscopy (Section VT,C) (80JHC1373). For a detailed description of Lum-broso s technique see [81JST(77)239]. [Pg.26]

By inspection, the flux is directly proportional to the solubility to the first power and directly proportional to the diffusion coefficient to the two-thirds power. If, for example, the proposed study involves mass transport measurements for series of compounds in which the solubility and diffusion coefficient change incrementally, then the flux is expected to follow this relationship when the viscosity and stirring rate are held constant. This model allows the investigator to simulate the flux under a variety of conditions, which may be useful in planning experiments or in estimating the impact of complexation, self-association, and other physicochemical phenomena on mass transport. [Pg.118]

The results of this study clearly show the complex dependence of the flocculation process on polymer dosage and charge density. It is seen that the form of dependence varies markedly among the responses monitored. In addition to the factors studied here, it can also be expected to depend upon several other physicochemical conditions of the system, including the type of mixing. The final state of flocculation achieved by a mineral/polymer system will depend upon many interactions in the system as determined by various chemical and hydrodynamic properties of the particles, polymer, dissolved organics and the fluids. [Pg.402]

The use of the Gutmann41 donor and acceptor numbers for describing solvent effects on rates, equilibria and other physicochemical properties has met with some success in organic chemistry. 62 63 However, because the donor and acceptor numbers of mixtures of solvents can not be inferred from the values of the pure solvents but must be determined experimentally, and also because the relationships describing the effects of solvent on chemical reactions were found to apply to non-associated solvents of medium to high dielectric constant, there has been very little attempt to introduce this approach into inorganic systems where the commonly used solvents are protic, i.e. associated. However, one such reaction that has been studied was63 equation (34) ... [Pg.517]

The detailed study of the properties of liquid ammonia in its role as a solvent, the various chemical reactions with it and in it as a medium, and also the physicochemical study of ammonia solutions of inorganic and organic substances have been the major achievement of Franklin (1935), Kraus (1922), and their many collaborators.
