Other applications of surfactants

Besides their use in detergents and in dispersions as stabilizers, surfactants find many more applications. One interesting application is their solubilization capability inside micelles. Aqueous solutions of [Pg.113]

Reverse micelles can be used as mini-reactors for enzyme-catalysed reactions. These reactions require an aqueous environment but often the reactants are only sparingly soluble in water. Consequently, the formation of reverse micelles in an organic solvent has been suggested. The reverse micelle contains the enzyme in a tiny pool of water. Reactants dissolved in the organic solvent diffuse into the reverse micelle and products diffuse out. For the design of [Pg.113]

Cell membranes consist essentially of a bimolecu-lar layer of lipids with the hydrocarbon chain orientated towards the interior and the hydrophilic groups on the outside. As with micelles, this organization is primarily the result of hydrophobic bonding. However, this simple lipid biomolecular model needs [Pg.114]
