Osteoblasts integrin expression

Sinha, R. K., and Tuan, R. S., Regulation of human osteoblast integrin expression by orthopaedic implant metals. Bone 18, 451-457 (1996). [Pg.165]

In addition to mediating cell adhesion, it has been demonstrated that integrin expression by osteoblasts determines their phenotypic expression (see the section Osteoblasts The Bone-Forming Cells ). For example, addition of either soluble concentrations of RGD (Moursi et al, 1996) or antibodies of the integrin pair avp() (Moursi et al., 1997) to confluent osteoblast cultures, blocked initiation and formation of mineral nodules these results provided evidence that integrin-fibronectin interactions leading to extracellular matrix development play a crucial role in osteoblast function (Moursi etal., 1996,1997). [Pg.144]

Fig. 3 Biomaterial surface chemistry modulates cellular responses. A SAMs presenting different chemistries differentially modulate integrin receptor binding in osteoblasts. B Substrate-dependent differences in osteoblast-specific gene expression correlate with integrin binding specificity. C Matrix mineralization is dependent on integrin binding specificity. Surfaces that support specific binding of asfii integrin exhibit high levels of mineralization. Adapted from [46,48]... Fig. 3 Biomaterial surface chemistry modulates cellular responses.
