Organosulphur compounds, determination

Jensen et al. [45, 46] also discuss complications in analysis due to the presence of elementary sulphur and organosulphur compounds in the gas chromatographic determination of DDT and polychlorobiphenyls in sediments and sewage sludges.

Table 15.10 presents a summary of the applications of gas chromatography to the determinations of other organic compounds, including chlorofluoroparalfins, carboxylic acids, monosaccharides, organosulphur compounds, polychlorobiphenols and azine herbicides in seawater. 

S NMR spectroscopy is potentially an adequate method for both qualitative and quantitative analysis of mixtures of organosulphur compounds. Kosugi62 has reported the 33S spectra of mixtures of 1- and 2-naphthalenesulphonates and of 1,5- and 2,6-naphthalene disulphonates at concentrations of approximately 0.15 M in D20. In both cases, (NH4)2S04 was used as an internal standard to determine chemical shifts and for quantitative analysis. At a magnetic field of 5.9 T, the 33S spectra of the two mixtures show two quite sharp and well-resolved resonances, and the results reported indicate that the quantitative analysis of these isomers is possible with a relative error of less than 10%. 

Among the organosulphur compounds proposed for the spectrophotometric determination of selenium, are Bismuthiol II (known as a reagent for Te) [41], 1,4-diphenylthiosemicarbazide [42], 2-mercaptoethanol [43], dithio-oxamide (rubeanic acid) [44], and DDTC [45]. Dithizone has been a basis for a sensitive method of determining Se (e = 7.4-10 ) [46]. The mechanism of the reaction between Se(fV) and dithizone is still the subject of contradictory opinions [47,48].
