Organosol coating systems

Plastisols and organosols are a special case of physically drying coatings systems in which the binders consist of finely dispersed poly( vinyl chloride) or thermoplastic poly(meth)acrylates suspended in plasticizers. Organosols also contain some solvent. On drying at elevated temperatures, the polymer particles are swollen by the plasticizer, a process known as gelation.

It should be noted that for internal applications compliance with FDA 175.300 and local regulations are required. This limits the types of materials which can be used for internal coatings. External coatings will only be considered here, because solvent based acrylic resins have little usage in internal lacquers other than PVC organosols. In the following sections, systems based on resins other than acrylics have been included to illustrate the types of formulation acrylic resins have replaced and reasons why, to compare alternative formulations for the same end use and to give an idea of the types of systems acrylic systems may be used in conjunction with. 

VINYZENE antimicrobials are recommended for film and sheeting, extruded profiles, plastisols, molded goods, organosols, fabric coatings and similar systems requiring an effective antimicrobial compound. These solutions are compatible with most polymer formulations and will not discolor or detract from the protected product s chemical or physical properties. VINYZENE products can be conveniently incorporated into the formulation.
