Hydrosilylation, the addition of a silicon-hydrogen bond to multiple bonds, is a valuable laboratory and industrial process in the synthesis of organosilicon compounds. The addition to carbon-carbon multiple bonds can be accomplished as a radical process initiated by ultraviolet (UV) light, y irradiation, or peroxides. Since the discovery in the 1950s that chloroplatinic acid is a good catalyst to promote the addition, metal-catalyzed transformations have become the commonly used hydrosi-... [Pg.322]

The addition reaction of hydrosilanes to alkenes and alkynes is called hydrosilylation, a reaction which was discovered when a mixture of 1-octene and trichlorosilane was heated in the presence of diacetyl peroxide. This reaction is particularly useful for the synthesis of organosilicon compounds. Since then, a variety of catalysts and conditions have been reported. Characteristic features of the reaction are discussed in this chapter. [Pg.763]

A rapid procedure has been described10 based on sodium peroxide bomb fusion, for the determination of silicon and halogen in fluorine-containing organosilicon compounds and resins. The silicon is separated from the decomposition product as zinc silicate and estimated gravimetrically as silica. The filtrate is concentrated, acidified and, when necessary, reduced with sulphur dioxide. Chloride, bromide or iodide is then determined by the usual methods. Fluoride can be determined in neutral solution either gravimetrically as calcium fluoride, or volumetrically with zirconium tetrachloride or thorium nitrate, or directly in the decomposition solution by titration with zirconium tetrachloride. [Pg.394]

Procedures have been described11 for the gravimetric determination of silicon in organosilicon compounds on the milligram scale. The sample is fused with sodium peroxide, and silicon is determined in the extract by precipitation as quinoline silicomol-ybdate. This procedure is not applicable if phosphorus is present in the sample but the... [Pg.394]

The first example of the hydrosilylation, that is, the reaction occurring between trichlorosilane and 1-octene in the presence of acetyl peroxide, was reported in 1947 by L. H. Sommer (1), but the discovery in 1957 of hexachloro-platinic acid as a very efficient catalyst by J. L. Speier (2) from Dow Coming became a strategic point for wide and common application of the reaction as one of the most fundamental and elegant methods explored over the next 50 years for laboratory and industrial synthesis of organosilicon and other related silicon compounds, which can also be directly subjected to organic synthesis. [Pg.1254]

Grafting of polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) on polydimethylsiloxane has been carried out by milling with the aim of improving solvent (benzene) resistance, tensile strength, and tear resistance [7]. As organosilicone rubber does not readily undergo scission by mechanical action, it was necessary to add benzoyl peroxides to the blend before mixing. Apparently the process is related to the scission of polydimethylsiloxane initiated by peroxide. The... [Pg.192]
