Organic solar cells device stability

A number of approaches are being pursued to modify the electrodes in organic solar cells in order to improve conductivity, selectivity, stability or cost. These include new electrode materials, changes in device processing and additional electrode sub-layers. Most studies have been carried out using the leading material combination, P3HT PCBM, as the active layer. 

Incorporation of organic solar cells into textiles has been realized reaching encouraging performances. Stability issues need to be solved before future commercialization can be envisaged. The mechanical stability of the devices was not limiting the function of the devices prepared. It would seem that low power conversion efficiency much more pertinent than the mechanical stability on the timescale of commercial. 

Furthermore, N-butyl-N -(4-pyridylheptyl)imidazolium bromide cells show a better long-term stability than that of 4-terf-butyl pyridine-based devices. These results indicate that the dye-sensitized solar cell devices based on the pyridinyl-functionalized ionic liquid additive can overcome the drawbacks of the volatile organic additive, and offer a feasible method to fabricate dye-sensitized solar cells in future practical applications (129).
