Optical switches -gallium m [GALLIUM AND GALLIUM COMPOUNDS] (Vol 12)... [Pg.704]

The racemisation of 1-phenylethylchloride catalysed by various Lewis acids in diethyl ether at 25 °C was studied by Evans and Satchell Gallium, aluminium and boron chlorides as well as boron fluoride induced a clean first-order loss of optical activity and the rate of this process was found to be directly proportional to the catalyst concentration. The effect of added water was investigated quantitatively in the case of gallium chloride and the retarding role of this compound followed the kinetic expression ... [Pg.178]

Semiconductors are also used in many optical devices. These tend to be so-called compound semiconductors, such as gallium arsenide (GaAs) or indium phosphide (InP) which can both emit light (as lasers and light-emitting diodes) or sense it (as photodetectors). [Pg.291]
