Oscillator Operation

These latter pieces of equipment may be called bulb-to-bulb distillation units. A commercial form is the Kugelrohr apparatus (Aldrich). The material to be distilled is placed in a suitably sized round-bottomed flask (one-third full) and attached to the receiver flask train (Fig. 2.120). This arrangement is connected to a horizontal drive shaft which enables the bulbs to be gently rocked by a safe air-or vacuum-operated oscillating motor, which speeds distillation and prevents bumping. The distillation flask may be heated up to 225 °C in an i.r.-radiant heater. The hollow drive shaft may be connected to a vacuum pumping system and the apparatus operates down to 1 x 10 5mmHg. [Pg.190]

Scientists have created an acoustic refrigerator, which uses a standing sound wave in a resonator to provide the motive power for operation. Oscillating gas particles increase the local temperature, causing heat to be transferred to the container walls, where it is expelled to the environment, cooling the interior. [Pg.5]

Modification of an AFM to operate in a dynamic mode aids the study of soft biological materials [58]. Here a stiff cantilever is oscillated near its resonant frequency with an amplitude of about 0.5 nm forces are detected as a shift to a new frequency... [Pg.297]

The original method employed was to scan eitiier the frequency of the exciting oscillator or to scan the applied magnetic field until resonant absorption occiined. Flowever, compared to simultaneous excitation of a wide range of frequencies by a short RF pulse, the scanned approach is a very time-inefficient way of recording the spectrum. Flence, with the advent of computers that could be dedicated to spectrometers and efficient Fourier transfomi (FT) algoritluns, pulsed FT NMR became the nomial mode of operation. [Pg.1470]

Explicit forms of the coefficients Tt and A depend on the coordinate system employed, the level of approximation applied, and so on. They can be chosen, for example, such that a part of the coupling with other degrees of freedom (typically stretching vibrations) is accounted for. In the space-fixed coordinate system at the infinitesimal bending vibrations, Tt + 7 reduces to the kinetic energy operator of a two-dimensional (2D) isotropic haiinonic oscillator. [Pg.480]

A mapping is said to be symplectic or canonical if it preserves the differential form dp A dq which defines the symplectic structure in the phase space. Differential forms provide a geometric interpretation of symplectic-ness in terms of conservation of areas which follows from Liouville s theorem [14]. In one-degree-of-freedom example symplecticness is the preservation of oriented area. An example is the harmonic oscillator where the t-flow is just a rigid rotation and the area is preserved. The area-preserving character of the solution operator holds only for Hamiltonian systems. In more then one-degree-of-freedom examples the preservation of area is symplecticness rather than preservation of volume [5]. [Pg.335]

Let us consider an example, that of the derivative operator in the orthonormal basis of Harmonic Oscillator functions. The fact that the solutions of the quantum Harmonic... [Pg.545]

Another resonant frequency instmment is the TA Instmments dynamic mechanical analy2er (DMA). A bar-like specimen is clamped between two pivoted arms and sinusoidally oscillated at its resonant frequency with an ampHtude selected by the operator. An amount of energy equal to that dissipated by the specimen is added on each cycle to maintain a constant ampHtude. The flexural modulus, E is calculated from the resonant frequency, and the makeup energy represents a damping function, which can be related to the loss modulus, E". A newer version of this instmment, the TA Instmments 983 DMA, can also make measurements at fixed frequencies as weU as creep and stress—relaxation measurements. [Pg.199]

Acoustic Wave Sensors. Another emerging physical transduction technique involves the use of acoustic waves to detect the accumulation of species in or on a chemically sensitive film. This technique originated with the use of quartz resonators excited into thickness-shear resonance to monitor vacuum deposition of metals (11). The device is operated in an oscillator configuration. Changes in resonant frequency are simply related to the areal mass density accumulated on the crystal face. These sensors, often referred to as quartz crystal microbalances (QCMs), have been coated with chemically sensitive films to produce gas and vapor detectors (12), and have been operated in solution as Hquid-phase microbalances (13). A dual QCM that has one smooth surface and one textured surface can be used to measure both the density and viscosity of many Hquids in real time (14). [Pg.391]
