Oligosaccharide synthons, synthesis

The purpose of this article is to briefly review those synthetic photochemical reactions with mono- and oligosaccharides used as specific substrates or as chiral synthons in synthesis. This article follows the excellent general and complete review published in 1981 by R. W. Binkely [1] in the Advances in Carbohydrate Chemistry and Biochemistry . 

Zuurmond and co-workers146 have carried out a synthesis of the same haptenic oligosaccharide with linker-arm (72) using the four key synthons 73,74,76, and 77. The disarmed L-rhamnose thioglycoside 74 provides an excellent example... 

To show the applicability of this strategy to the synthesis of longer-chain oligosaccharides, iterative couplings were further examined by constructing the hepta-saccharide 12 in which all synthons were derived from 1. Firstly, thioglycoside donor 7 was coupled with acceptor fluoride 3 under conditions (a) to give the disaccharide fluoride 8 (85%) which was then reacted with the acceptor 4 to produce 9...
