Olfactory camera

The principles of field effect devices with special regard to chemical sensing will be briefly described in the next section. It will be demonstrated how such devices can be used in sensor arrays eventually together with other types of gas sensors to make electronic noses for the identification, classification and analysis of gas mixtures (or odours) [5-7]. A truly microanalytical system, an "olfactory camera" based on a field effect transistor array is also suggested. 

We suggested a more spectacular, two dimensional, development of integrated sensor arrays a few years ago to create what could be called an "olfactory camera" [6]. As expected, precise centering of the image onto the OB glomeruli is critical. Improvement in camera positioning and stimulation on the same individual with different analytes, should make possible to identify if there exist any kind of temporal codification of the olfactory information. Both ICA and MPCA can help in the identification of this stimulatory-inhibitory activity, and become useful tools in this kind of analysis.
