Oils, penetrating wood finishes

Oils. A number of oils (linseed, tung, oiticica) and modified oils have traditionally been used as penetrating wood finishes. These oils do not leave a film, and they do not last longer than 1-1.5 years because of their low resistance to UV light and water. Therefore, penetrating oils find limited use as outdoor finishes, but they are widely used as interior furniture finishes. [Pg.287]

Penetrating finish n. A low-viscosity oil or varnish which penetrates wood, leaving a very thin film at the surface. [Pg.702]

Handbook of chemistry and physics, 52nd edn. Weast RC (ed). The Chemical Rubber, Boca Raton, FL) Penetrating Finish n A low-viscosity oil or varnish which penetrates wood, leaving a very thin film at the surface. [Pg.523]

Most stains used for finishing shingles and other nalural wood exlerior products are made with pigmented linseed oil. diluted with hytlrocarhon solvents for penetration. [Pg.508]

The PEG is not fixed or cured in the wood, and it leaches out if the wood contacts water. For this reason, PEG-treated wood usually is finished with a penetrating oil or polyurethane varnish. PEG is used primarily to treat cross-sections of trees for plaques, clock faces, and tabletops. It also is used to stabilize bowls and other turnings, carvings, and rifle stocks, and to treat archaeological water-logged wood. [Pg.1264]

Solid-Color Stains, Solid-color stains are opaque finishes (also called hiding, heavy-bodied, and opaque stains) that come in a wide range of colors and are made with a much higher concentration of pigment than the semitransparent penetrating stains. As a result, solid-color stains totally obscure the natural wood color and grain. Oil-based or alkyd solid-color stains form a film much like paint, and consequently they can peel from the substrate. Latex-based solid-color stains are also available and likewise form a film. Both oil-based and latex-based solid-color stains are similar to thinned paints and can usually be applied over old paint or semitransparent stains. [Pg.287]

Penetrating Finishes. Penetrating finishes, which do not form a film over the wood, include oils, water repellents, stains, preservatives, and surface treatments. [Pg.287]

Floor sealer n. Composition of resins, with or without oils, in a solvent designed to penetrate the wood rather than produce a surface finish. [Pg.420]

Waterproofs treated or untreated wood while penetrating oils bring out the natural wood grain finish. Prevents swelling, cracking and warping. [Pg.239]
