Vacuum distillates or residual fraction of vacuum distillates are the main source of lubricating oils from the petroleum industry. Although they account for only 1% of the volume of petroleum fuel sales they are a high value unit. Besides lubrication they are used as heat transfer mediums, hydraulic fluids, corrosion protection, etc., both in industry and society. 

Petrolatum is produced from lubricating oils. Petrolatum is used in the medicinal field where it is combined with other compounds to form salves, creams, ointments and petroleum jelly.
