In an offset-printing process, the printing plate has hydrophobic and hydrophilic areas instead of raised bumps. Both water and hydrophobic ink are coated onto the plate via complex transfer systems, shown only schematically in Figure 4.9. The water and hydrophobic ink displace each other so that the ink stays on the hydrophobic areas of the printing plate, thus defining the pattern to be printed.

PoIy(bithiophene) layers are claimed for use as imaging systems for the offset printing process, because this process is based on the different wettability of printing and nonprinting areas. The neutral hydrophobic polymer can be oxidized electrochemically in an electrolyte solution (tetrabutylammonium perchlorate in acetonitrile) to form the oxidized (doped) hydrophilic form of the polymer. This reaction can be conducted reversibly for many thousand cycles changing between hydrophilic and hydrophobic behavior of the polymeric surface [162-166]. 

The process of printing by indirect plate image transfer is most commonly commercially represented by the lithographic offset printing process by which a printing plate transfers (offsets) an inked image to a smooth rubber roll (or blanket) that, in turn, transfers the inked image to the substrate. 

To begin to consider the promotion of adhesion using lithographic processes with porous and nonporous substrates, we must first examine the three types of offset printing processes utilized - 1) non-heatset sheetfed, 2) heatset, and 3) non-heat-set web offset - together with the prevalent inks and their composition. 

The primary sources for the mineral oil contamination in secondary fibre-based packaging materials are the coldset inks from newspapers because offset printing is the dominating printing process for this type of graphic paper product in Europe. Offset coldset inks consist of up to 30% of mineral oil as solvent. In general, offset inks are available which are based on mineral oil-reduced or mineral oil-free...
