The concept of property space, which was coined to quanhtahvely describe the phenomena in social sciences [11, 12], has found many appUcahons in computational chemistry to characterize chemical space, i.e. the range in structure and properhes covered by a large collechon of different compounds [13]. The usual methods to approach a quantitahve descriphon of chemical space is first to calculate a number of molecular descriptors for each compound and then to use multivariate analyses such as principal component analysis (PCA) to build a multidimensional hyperspace where each compound is characterized by a single set of coordinates. [Pg.10]

It is paradoxically in the most urban of settings that one becomes powerfully aware of the enduring beauty and utility of nature. It is the reshaping of nature that has made civilized urban life possible. Nature has a social and cultural history that has enriched countless dimensions of the urban experience. The design, use, and meaning of urban space involves the transformation of nature into a new synthesis. ... [Pg.12]

Ernest Solvay regarded science, in its various forms, as the key that would open the door to a richer life for man. He had remarked once Among the new paths of science, I undertook to follow three directions three problems which, in my view, form a certain unity. First, a general problem of physics—the constitution of matter in time and space then a problem of physiology—the mechanism of life from its most humble manifestations up to the phenomena of thought processes and finally, the third one, a problem complementary to the first two—the evolution of the individual and that of social groups. ... [Pg.4]

Desecration of natural spaces carries both social and financial penalties. The author of an article published in a regional newspaper warned local residents that in the summer these days, going out to nature is pos-... [Pg.150]

In this chapter we argue that for hydrogen and fuel cells to compete in a future automobility market, they must be integrated with mobility and information systems. Mobile electricity and communications extend the choice framework, especially in terms of time-space zones and personal and social investments in those zones, and emphasize choice mechanisms over localized practices. All locations become globalized and vehicles become addresses. [Pg.36]
