The G-agents are all viscous liquids of varying volatility (vapor density relative to air between 4.86 and 6.33) with faint odors ( faintly fruity , or spicy , odor of camphor ). Agent VX is an amber-colored hquid with a vapor density of 9.2, and is considered odorless. Thus, nerve agent vapors possess little to no olfactory warning properties (Table 6.1). [Pg.44]

Citral is an example of a very large group of natural products called terpenes. They are responsible for the characteristic odors of plants such as eucalyptus, pine, mint, peppermint, and lemon. The odors of camphor, menthol, lavender, rose, and hundreds of other fragrances are due to terpenes, which have ten carbon atoms with double bonds, and aldehyde, ketone, or alcohol functional groups. (See Fig. 2.)... [Pg.73]

Needles from 30% ethanol, mp 56-58.5. bplj(t 35 bp07 24. Slight odor of camphor, Soly in water 4.0 mg/mi. Freely sol in alcohol, ether, benzene, glycol ethers. therap cat Anxiolytic. [Pg.557]

Orange needles from methanol or ethanol odor of camphor. mp 173-174". Sublimes above 100°. Volatile in steam. Practically inso) in water, 10% NaOH, and coned boiling HCI. Sol in alcohol, ether, benzene. Dissolves in dil nitric and coned sulfuric acids forming a deep ted soln with blue fluorescence. The molecule is diamagnetic and the dipole momenr is effectively zero. [Pg.633]

Similarly, the bornyl carbocation (2.17) can react with water to give borneol and this can be oxidised to camphor, the characteristic odorant of camphor wood. The isocamphane skeleton is formed by a Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement of the bornyl carbocation. [Pg.37]

IV. Diagnosis is usually based on a history of exposure. The pungent odor of camphor and other volatile oils is usually apparent. [Pg.148]

Spherical molecules stimulate the typical pleasant but strong odor of camphor, provided that they match into a bowl-shaped receptor cavity of about 900 pm length, 750 pm width, and 400 pm depth (1 pm = 10 m). Elongated molecules with a monocyclic ring and a side chain such as rose oxide, as well as the ionones... [Pg.176]

Dense and moderately viscous liquids with the odor of camphor and iodoform. Insoluble in water but can be diluted with carbon tetrachloride, benzene, toluene, acetone, diethyl ether, chloroform, aniline and glacial acetic acid. Prepared by passing acetylene into cooled bromine. With a flash point of 335°C, it decomposes on heating at 235°C. Irritating and narcotic. [Pg.1171]
