9-Octadecen

The extent of pheromone degradation under field conditions was investigated with a microencapsulated formulation containing a saturated hydrocarbon and acetate (octadecane and tetradecyl acetate (14 Ac)), the corresponding monounsaturated hydrocarbon and acetate ((Z)-4-octadecene and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14 Ac)) and a diunsaturated acetate ((Z,S )-9,ll-tetradeca-dienyl acetate (ZE9,ll-14 Ac)), chosen so that all the components had similar volatilities. On exposure to sunlight, loss of the diene was more rapid than loss of the monounsaturated components which in turn disappeared faster than the saturated components (Fig. 1). All components disappeared at a similar, slower rate when shielded from direct sunlight.

After the first structural representation of this long-chain, amino alcohol had been proved erroneous, Carter and coworkers6,7 proposed the correct structure, namely, 2-amino-4-octadecene-l,3-diol (2). 

Similarly, (25,3/ ,4 )-2-octadecanoylamino-4-octadecene-l,3-diol 266 has been prepared from diethyl tartrate cyclic sulfate by azide opening of the sulfate ring as shown in Scheme 68 (93LA55). 

The common and most abundant long-chain bases in sponge and echinoderm cerebrosides are derived from sphingosine ((2S, 3/ ,4 )-2-amino-4-octadecen-1,3-diol) (3) and the saturated phytosphingosine ((25,35,4/ )-2-amino-octadecan-triol)(4)(Fig.2). 

Lipids which contain sphingosine (trans-D-erythro-l,3-dihydroxy-2-amino-4-octadecene) or a related amino alcohol are known as sphingolipids.
