Observation exploitation

Another related observation, exploited by Cheshire [5.8], is that in the SCA with a rectilinear trajectory it is actually the projectile, not the electron, that is in an inertial frame as it moves with constant velocity. We can exploit this if, instead of assuming the electron is fixed in position, we allow it to recoil freely. We are then presented with the situation of an electron scattering from the fixed projectile (in the opposite direction). This scattering problem can be treated with the Glauber approximation. Or, as the projectile-electron interaction is most often Coulombic, exactly This is the continuum Distorted Wave Approximation (CDWA). Here the correct off-energy-shell behavior can be inserted. A further important advance is to distort both exit and entrance channels. A last refinement is to recognise that the electron is neither free nor frozen, and to try to incorporate its attachment to the target more realistically. [Pg.161]

As the number of atoms in the asyimnetric unit increases, the solution of a structure by any of these phase-independent methods becomes more difficult, and by 1950 a PhD thesis could be based on a single crystal structure. At about that time, however, several groups observed that the fact that the electron density must be non-negative everywhere could be exploited to place restrictions on possible phases. The first use of this fact was by D Marker and J S Kasper [24], but their relations were special cases of more general relations introduced by J Karle and H Hauptman [25]. Denoting by A. the set of indices h., k., /., the Karle-Hauptman condition states that all matrices of the fonu... [Pg.1375]

It is a general observation that herbicide degradation occurs more readily ia cultivated than fallow sod, suggesting that rhizosphere organisms are effective herbicide degraders. Whether this can be effectively exploited ia a phytoremediatioa strategy remains to be seea. [Pg.35]

Novel aromatic carboxylation reactions have been observed in the anaerobic transformation of phenols to ben2oates (82). A mixed anaerobic microbial consortium apparentiy transforms phenol (33) through an intermediate to ben2oic acid (34) via dehydroxylation. This reaction has not yet been widely exploited for its obvious synthetic value. [Pg.312]

Another property pecuHar to SMAs is the abiUty under certain conditions to exhibit superelastic behavior, also given the name linear superelasticity. This is distinguished from the pseudoelastic behavior, SIM. Many of the martensitic alloys, when deformed well beyond the point where the initial single coalesced martensite has formed, exhibit a stress-induced martensite-to-martensite transformation. In this mode of deformation, strain recovery occurs through the release of stress, not by a temperature-induced phase change, and recoverable strains in excess of 15% have been observed. This behavior has been exploited for medical devices. [Pg.463]

Exploitation of analytical selectivity. We have seen, in our discussion of the A —> B C series reaction (Scheme IX), that access to the concentration of A as a function of time is valuable because it permits to be easily evaluated. Modern analytical methods, particularly chromatography, constitute a powerful adjunct to kinetic investigations, and they render nearly obsolete some very difficult kinetic problems. For example, the freedom to make use of the pseudoorder technique is largely dependent upon the high sensitivity of analytical methods, which allows us to set one reactant concentration much lower than another. An interesting example of analytical control in the study of the Scheme IX system is the spectrophotometric observation of the reaction solution at an isosbestic point of species B and C, thus permitting the A to B step to be observed. [Pg.79]

The nuclear spin of the stable isotopes of the halogens has been exploited in nmr spectroscopy. The use of in particular, with its 100% abundance, convenient spin of j and excellent sensitivity, has resulted in a vast and continually expanding literature since chemical shifts were first observed in 1950. The resonances for Cl and Cl were also first observed in 1950. Appropriate nuclear parameters are in Table 17.6. From this it is clear that the F resonance can be observed with high receptivity... [Pg.802]

In addition to the nucleophilic displacement of the halogen atom, subsequent substitution of the heteroarylium moiety has been observed in numerous cases. Tliese substitution reactions beneht from the increasing importance of the negative hyperconjugation (Scheme 13). Such a pathway has been intensively exploited to synthesize (fused) hve-, six-, and seven-membered heterocycles. [Pg.200]

A -(l-Haloalkyl)pyridinium halides have been advantageously employed in the Hantzsch multicomponent synthesis, yielding alkyl 1,4-dihydropyri-dine-3,5-dicarboxylates, which are a well-known class of calcium channel modulators (81AGE762). Tire halides readily interact with an excess of an ethyl 3-aminobut-2-enoate 82 (R = H) in dichloromethane at room temperature to afford the heterocycles 83 (R = H) in good to excellent yields (65-95%) (92T1263). Tliis observation has been exploited to perform a quantitative study of the reactivity of the salts (93CB1251).Tlie results have... [Pg.210]

Some halogenometalate species have been observed to have formed spontaneously during spectroelectrochemical studies in ionic liquids. For example, [MoCl ] (which is hydrolyzed in water, is coordinated by solvent in polar solvents, and has salts that are insoluble in non-polar solvents) can only be observed in basic (X(A1C13) < 0.5 chloroaluminate ionic liquids [1]. FFowever, this work has been directed at the measurement of electrochemical data, rather than exploitation of the ionic liquids as solvents for synthesis [2]. It has been shown that the tetrachloroa-luminate ion will act as a bidentate ligand in acidic X(A1C13) > 0.5 chloroaluminate ionic liquids, forming [M(AlCl4)3] ions [3]. This was also the result of the spontaneous formation of the complexes, rather than a deliberate attempt to synthesize them. [Pg.289]

It is known that polymers may exist in various stationary states, which are defined by the amount and distribution of intermolecular bonds in the sample at definite network structure. The latter is defined by the conditions of storage, exploitation, and production of the network. That is why T values may be different. The highest value is observed in the equilibrium state of the system. In this case it is necessary to point out, that the ph value becomes close to the ph one at n,. [Pg.366]

Appraisal wells, drilled at the exploration stage within structures or other traps with an observed oil and gas content for the purpose of studying the geological structure of the deposit and the quality of the mineral to the extent necessary to permit confirmation of oil and natural gas reserves in categories which will serve as a basis for investment decisions, as well as obtaining data required for developing and exploiting the deposit. [Pg.25]

Despite several attractive features in this method of direct halogen introduction and the obvious applications in the synthesis of deoxy sugars, its uses have not been further exploited by other groups of workers. Some new related methods have become available which reportedly eliminate the difficulties previously encountered such as rearrangement, unreactivity due to steric hindrance, and phosphonate ester formation. The reaction is based on the observation (28) that triethylphosphine reacts with ethanol and carbon tetrachloride to give ethyl chloride, chloroform, and triethylphosphite. In a new adaptation (76, 77) of this... [Pg.185]

The precise control of ROMP methodology has been exploited by Schrock and co-workers in the polymerization of a norbomene monomer functionalized with a distyrylbenzene side-chain 70 [1051. When calcium is used as a cathode, an internal device efficiency of 0.3% is observed and the peak emission is in the blue (475 nm). [Pg.341]
