The alternative route involves the air oxidation of cyclohexane and proceeds via the production of a mixture of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone often known as KA oil. It was in the cyclohexane oxidation section of the caprolactam plant of Nypro Ltd that the huge explosion occurred at Flixborough, England in 1974. [Pg.483]

A large twenty-inch bypass pipe carrying caprolactum at a NYPRO Ltd. plant leaked, resulting in the escape of a large amount of the chemical. The caprolactum cloud exploded, setting off a fire over 20 acres of land. The blast killed 28 people, injured 36, and 3,000 others were evacuated the blast also leveled every building on the 60-acre plant site. [Pg.34]
