Nuclear power enrichment services

A few years later, one had to realize that most of the ambitious plans for building nuclear power plants would be strongly delayed or even abandoned. Only France stuck to its original plans and built a large number of nuclear reactors. The Coredif project did not materialize. In 1982, the membrane production plants of Ceraver, Euroceral and SPEC were shut down and later on dismantled due to the lack of demand for another enrichment plant (the service life of a gaseous diffusion membrane is several decades). For France, this was an abrupt end of the nuclear period for membranes. [Pg.3]

All the components of the nuclear-fission power system are fully operational except for ultimate waste disposal. However, spent fuel is not reprocessed in the United States because there is currently an adequate supply of natural uranium and enrichment services availab 1 e domestically and from other countries at a 1 ower cost than that of the recovered fissionable material from spent fuel. Also, the United States unilaterally declared a moratorium on reprocessing in the early 1980s in an attempt to reduce the spread of nuclear weapons. Current economics do not favor a return to reprocessing and fuel recycling in the United States at this time in as much as it does dramatically increase the amount of interim and final waste storage capacity that is required. [Pg.940]

Several experimental nuclear reactors have been put into service in Argentina since the early 1960s. All of them use aluminium clad fuel, most of the MTR type. RA3, located at the Ezeiza Atomic Centre (near Buenos Aires) is the most powerful of these experimental reactors. It started up burning 90% enriched uranium, and the fuel plates were made of pure (99.7%) aluminium It was converted to use 20% enriched uranium at the end of the 1980s, and at that time the fuel plates started to be manufactured with 6061 alloy. Some of the earliest irradiated fuel elements were inserted into RA6 in Bariloche (some 1700 km south-west of Buenos Aires), a zero power reactor, where they have been in service for almost 20 years. [Pg.77]

Why do even the Russians and the Chinese pay hp service to the objective of preventing the Iranian enrichment plant, or the North Korea nuclear missile program, even if they do not show much sohdarity with the western powers in taking measures in the Security Council to deter the Iranians ... [Pg.546]
