The concentrated positive charge in the nucleus explains the deflection of the alpha particles—the repulsive force produced between the positive nucleus and the positive alpha particles causes the deflections. Alpha particles closely approaching the nucleus were deflected at small angles, while alpha particles directly approaching the nucleus were deflected at very large angles. Many scientists in the early twentieth century found Rutherford s nuclear atomic model to be fundamentally incomplete. To physicists, the model did not explain how the atom s electrons are arranged in the space around the nucleus. Nor did it address the question of why the negatively charged electrons are not pulled into the atom s positively charged nucleus. Chemists found Rutherford s nuclear model lacking because it did not begin to account for the differences in chemical behavior among the various elements. 

The popular redox reactions for the formation of metal oxides, sulfides or halides from the elements even require a nuclear atomic model for the changes from atoms to ions. They are not at all suitable for introduction or use of the particle concept because the limits of the particle model would be way exceeded [4]. 

The negatively charged electrons are held within the atom by their attraction to the positively charged nucleus. Rutherford s nuclear atomic model is shown in Figure 4.13.
