The electronic structure of dichorodiphenylplumbane was calculated by the SCF-MS (self-consistent field multiple scattering) molecular orbital method and compared to that of dichlorodiphenylstannane. Supplementary spectroscopic data needed to clarify the bonding of Ag to the ortho-chlorine (Cl ) atom have been provided by the Cl NQR (nuclear quadrupole resonance) spectrum of 43. According to previous studies " the C1 NQR frequency of a coordinated chlorophenolate ort/to-chlorine (Cl ) should be lowered relative to that of the non-coordinated ort/to-chlorine (Cl ). The C1 NQR spectrum of 43 taken at 77 K showed that the frequencies of the two ort/to-chlorines of the trichlorophenolate ligand differ by 1.500 MHz (35.039-33.539 = 1.500 MHz). This indicates that the o-Cl is coordinated to the silver atom (the C1 NQR frequency of p-Cl in 43 equals 35.100 MHz). The...
