Tesch and Degesch had a very euphonious connection, apparently having nothing to do with Farben. Then it was discovered that on the administrative committee of Degesch sat Heinrich Hoerlein, Wilhelm Ernst Mann, and Dr. Wurster. The Degesch manager, a Dr. Peters, was directly responsible to these three men. 

Another development in the seventeenth century was the proliferation of alchemical books. Certain publishers, notably De Bry of Frankfurt, printed almost nothing else. Apart from Michael Maier s Atalanta Fugiens, other celebrated works included the Book of Lambspring (1599), Heinrich Khunrath s Ampitheatre of Eternal Wisdom (1609), and Altus s Mutus Liber (1677), an illustrated book that almost entirely dispensed with a written text. Encyclopaedic compendia appeared, such as the Theatrum Chemicum (1602), and the Theatrum Chemicum Britannicum (1652), edited by Elias Ashmole.

Bernd Wrackmeyer received his Diploma in Chemistry from the University of Munich in 1971 and his Ph.D. from the same University with Heinrich Noth in 1973. He performed postdoctoral studies at John Cass College of Science and Technology in London with William McFarlane in 1974 and moved back to the University of Munich in 1975, where he finished his habilitation in 1979. He became a Heisenberg-Fellow in 1983 and moved to the University of Bayreuth in 1986. His work focuses on the application of multinuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), on the chemistry of organoboranes, carboranes, Group 14 metal chemistry and on metal amides.

For years, scientists have yearned for the ability to see Individual atoms. Because atoms are so small, this had been nothing more than a dream. Now, the scanning tunneling microscope, STM, gives scientists the ability to look at individual atoms. It was invented in 1981 by Gerd Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer, scientists working for IBM in Zurich, Switzerland. They shared the 1986 Nobel Prize in physics for their discovery. 

The next two chapters, from a paper by Hidetsugu Abe and co-workers at the Toyohashi University of Technology, and a poster by Heinrich Noth and Erich Striedl of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, describe systems for handling NMR spectra and chemical structures on a microcomputer.
