Similar work was performed by Shaw et al.3 in 1999 when they used FT-Raman, equipped with a charge coupled device (CCD) detector (for rapid measurements) as an on-line monitor for the yeast biotransformation of glucose to ethanol. An ATR (attenuated total reflectance) cell was used to interface the instrument to the fermentation tank. An Nd YAG laser (1064 nm) was used to lower fluorescence interference and a holographic notch filter was employed to reduce Rayleigh scatter interference. Various chemometric approaches were explored and are explained in detail in their paper. The solution was pumped continuously through a bypass, used as a window in which measurements were taken.

FIGURE 15.20 The basic concept of notch waveform isolation. In the isolation process, the working point of precursor ions is moved first to a j-value at which the secular frequency of precursor ions lies inside the window of the notch waveform. Subsequently, the notch waveform is turned on to eject all unwanted ions. Due to the limited duration of application of the notch waveform, the window is not a perfect box as is seen in the bottom picture of this figure.

PVC with chlorinated polyethylene blends has improved impact performance, especially in the presence of notches and at lower temperatures than unmodified grades of PVC. They are used in continental Europe for external applications (e.g. rainwater goods) unmodified UPVC would be acceptable in the UK. Such blends are finding increasing use throughout Europe in extruded sections for window frames.
