Epithelial cells express but do not apically localize Pins, and do not express Insc. We have previously shown that ectopically expressed Insc localizes to the apical cortex in wild-type epithelial cells (Kraut et al 1996). Interestingly, ectopic Insc expression causes Pins, which is normally localized to the lateral cortex, to localize to the apical cortex. Conversely, apical localization of ectopically expressed Insc is dependent on pins. Insc ectopically expressed in Pins- epithelial cells does not localize as an apical crescent it adopts a cytoplasmic distribution which is enriched towards the apical side of the cell during interphase and is undetectable during mitosis, presumably due to rapid degradation. This instability of ectopically expressed Insc may be why the 90° rotation in the mitotic spindles which occurs as a consequence of Insc ectopic expression in the wild-type epithelial cells no longer occurs when Insc is expressed in Pins-embryos. These results indicate that Insc is necessary and sufficient for the recruitment of Pins to the apical cortex of wild-type epithelial cells. [Pg.144]

Chia No, what determines fate in the daughter cells is whether or not they inherit the cell fate determinants which are normally localized as basal crescents. If the crescents of cell fate determinants are not fixed, they will not always overlie one of the spindle poles. Consequently, their segregation to the daughter cells will not always be asymmetric. [Pg.154]

Thus, local softness contains the same information as the Fukui function fir) plus additional information about the total molecular softness, which is related to the global reactivity with respect to a reaction partner, as stated in HSAB principle. Thus, the Fukui function may be thought of as a normalized local softness. Atomic softness values can easily be calculated by using Equation 32.4, namely... [Pg.506]

The net area of this intimate contact is called the real area of contact Areai. It is assumed that plastic flow occurs at most microscopic points of contact, so that the normal, local pressures correspond to the hardness aj, of the softer of the two materials that are in contact. The (maximum) shear pressure is given by the yield strength cry of the same material. The net load L and the net shear force Fs follow by integrating aj, and cry over the real area of contact Areai. That is, L = cs, Arca and Fs = ayAreai. Hence, the plastic deformation scenario results in the following (static) friction coefficient ... [Pg.73]

Mott (1985,1989a) proposed that in liquids all collisions are inelastic, so that l—Li and the interference term in (52) vanishes. Thus, in a sense, amorphous solids, where strong phonon interaction leads over a certain temperature range to the relation Lx a. We find that, as the energy drops into a region of small density of states, increases and the normal localization condition again becomes valid. [Pg.57]

At more elevated temperatures, the diffusion mechanisms become more complex and jumps to more distant sites occur, as do collective jumps via multiple defects. At still higher temperatures, adatoms apparently become delocalized and spend significant fractions of their time in flight rather than in normal localized states. In many cases, the Arrhenius plot becomes curved at these temperatures (as in Fig. 9.1), due to the onset of these new mechanisms. Also, the diffusion becomes more isotropic and less dependent on the surface orientation. [Pg.224]

Corrosion control of metal surfaces depends on the formation and maintenance of a protective corrosion inhibitor film on the exposed metal surface. This protective film may be established during normal application of a corrosion inhibitor program however, there will be some lag time before the film is completely built up. Metal surfaces that are exposed to the cooling water before the film is completed may become candidates for accelerated corrosion during the initial system operation. Normally, localized corrosion or pitting is common during these early stages of operation. [Pg.188]

Figure 11.8 The color of the current pixel c, and local space average color a are projected onto the plane r + g + b = 1. Let c and a be the normalized points. Now, normalized local space average color is projected onto the gray vector w. The projection is subtracted from a, which gives us ax- The component ax is orthogonal to the gray vector w. This component is subtracted from the color of the current pixel that gives us the normalized output color 6. Finally, the output color is scaled back to the intensity of the input pixel. The rhombohedral structure, obtained via the optimization of crystal energy [equation (1)] without the JT term inclusion or setting IVj = 0, is stable with respect to deformations of the crystal. The experimental and calculated structure parameters are listed in Table 2. As the temperature decreases down to about 400 K [5,8] the crystal symmetry changes to monoclinic phase. The major difference between the monoclinic and rhombohedral phases is the presence of JT distortions and a doubled primitive cell. The local values of JT distortions on different Mn3+ ions could be obtained via the projection of oxygen ions coordinates onto the normal local Eg modes of each [Mn06] octahedra (the numbering of Mn3+ is carried out according to Fig. 1). [Pg.591]
