Norbornadiene complexes with silver

Norbornadiene (NBD) forms two different complexes with silver nitrate, NBD-AgN03 18,19) and NBD-2AgN03 (/, 18,19). The latter complex, for which a crystal structure has recently been reported (2), can be obtained by adding N BD to an aqueous solution of silver nitrate. The crystals that separated were recrystallized from ethanol. Each double bond in the norbornadiene molecule is coordinated to a silver atom in a triangular-planar configuration. The NBD molecule then serves to cross-link two AgN03 chains. 

The norbornadiene complexes of AgNOs (577) and AgBF4 (491) are quite analogous in stoichiometry to those of 1,3-butadiene with the same salts. A structural analysis (28) of the 1 2 complex (C7Hg)(AgNOg)2 has shown chains of silver nitrate molecules cross-linked by norbornadiene molecules (Fig. 11). Norbornadiene complexes of platinum and palladium 14 reacted with silver carboxylates to form the carboxymetalation products 15 which, on treatment with triphenylphosphane, underwent intramolecular alkene insertion to form the nortricyclene skeleton 16. Two series of cationic complexes, [Mo(NO)2L4]2+ (L = RCN, py, etc.) and [MoCl(NO)2L3]+ have been prepared by halide abstraction from [MoCl2(NO)2L2] using silver salts in DME (method D). Some members of the series catalyze the polymerization of norbornadiene, whereas the uncharged parent compounds do not.29 The series [Mo(NO)2L4]2+ (L is a displaceable solvent such as THF) may also be obtained by treatment of [Mo(CO)6] with NO[PF6] followed by addition of further ligands such as bipy.29 This latter reaction also gives [ Mo(NO)2(PF6)2 ] which is assumed to be a polymer with weak PF6 bridges.29... 

For olefin Ti-complexes, copper(II) halides as fine powders react with butadiene, norbornadiene, cyclooctadiene or dicyclopentadiene to give the corresponding olefin complex (2-4). Some olefins readily form silver nitrate complexes (2-5) in an aqueous or alcoholic solution.
