SiKxessful polymerization of heterobicychc monomers depends on careful selection of the catalyst system, and only a few examples exist at present. Thus, 7-oxa-norbomene derivatives can ring-open when reacted with osmium or mthenium catalysts.

Influence of polymerization initiators have been studied using quantum chemistry methods. Several initiators have been tested in the copolymerization of tetraflu-oroethylene (IFF) with functionalized norbomene derivatives. The semiempirical PM3 method was used [35]. Experimentally, it has been shown that the fiuorinated initiator improves the alkaline solubility of the resulting fluoropolymer. The increased dissolution rate was thus argued to result from an increase in the acidity strength caused by the initiator. NCA polymerization allows also the preparation of comb-shaped polymers. Lu et al. reported the one-pot synthesis of comb-shaped polymers via ring-opening metathesis polymerization and NCA polymerization (Fig. 18). The authors used a norbomene derivative with a trimethylsilyl-protected amine to prepare a polymer with pendant trimethylsilyl amine groups, which can be used as initiators for the NCA polymerization (see. Fig. lb) [17].
