The SHG active compounds found in Tables II-VIII are just a small fraction of the hundreds of substances we have screened by the powder technique. Of the active compounds only another small fraction will provide crystals of size and quality as is required for optical application. A program in crystal growth as thorough as the effort which has gone into synthesis must be instituted in order to take full advantage of these materials. Overall, it will suffice to say that the promising nonlinear properties observed from such a small fraction of all the possible organic compounds bodes very well for future endeavor. [Pg.77]

The first chemical transformations carried out with Cjq were reductions. After the pronounced electrophilicity of the fullerenes was recognized, electron transfer reactions with electropositive metals, organometallic compounds, strong organic donor molecules as well as electrochemical and photochemical reductions have been used to prepare fulleride salts respectively fulleride anions. Functionalized fulleride anions and salts have been mostly prepared by reactions with carbanions or by removing the proton from hydrofullerenes. Some of these systems, either functionalized or derived from pristine Cjq, exhibit extraordinary solid-state properties such as superconductivity and molecular ferromagnetism. Fullerides are promising candidates for nonlinear optical materials and may be used for enhanced photoluminescence material. [Pg.49]

The theoretical problems associated with calculating nonlinear polarizabilities is closely linked to the field of charge transfer spectroscopy and reactivity as well as the field of multi-photon and excited state spectroscopy.
