Noncontact heat exchangers, which transfer heat between fluids through a conductive barrier (Figure 23.9), are used in a wide variety of applications, including nuclear steam generators, condensers, and closed feedwater heaters.

Utility systems are unique and in part defined as traditional utility systems and in part as processing equipment. Part of the system is supplying noncontact utilities and part of the system is supplying products that contact the final product or intermediates. One example of these dual systems is the water systems. There are the traditional cooUng waters for jackets and heat exchangers, but also there are varied clean water systems that supply water that are used in processing intermediates or final products, as well as, being used as part of the final product formulation. 

Specimen pulled tees were subjected to cyclic strain and a stress versus cycles-to-failure curve was established. From this an allowable operating curve was derived, using measured plant data to define the strain history, and a damage account was mainUuned. Noncontacting displacement transducers were fitted to 240 positions on the heat exchangers to provide strain measurements to define fatigue development.
