Nomological networks

Instead, Cronbach and Meehl (1955) suggested that classification should be based on a construct validation approach. Construct validation involves developing a theory about a construct that is defined by a set of interconnected laws. These laws are ideas that relate constructs to one another as well as to observable behaviors. The set of constructs, laws, and observable behaviors is called a nomological network. 

The scientific meaning of constructs accrues from the role they play in nomological networks. Construct validation proceeds by establishing functional relationships between assessment vehicles and external criteria with the ultimate aim of tracing the causal directionality of these functions.

These criteria are also valid in equal measures for modular technical systems. The precise definition of product modularity is provided by articulating a product system modularity construct in the domain of tangible assembled artifacts [3]. It focuses product modularity to the criteria of component separability and component combinability. This definition is finally related to other definitional perspectives synthesized by a literature review component commonality, function binding, interface standardization, and loose coupling. The nomological network of the product modularity construct is derived from it and subject to further validation.
