Some street names for inhalants include air blast, hippie crack, moon gas, poor man s pot, rush, and snappers. Amyl nitrite is known as amies, pearls, and poppers. Nitrous oxide is known as hysteria, laughing gas, NOZ, shoot the breeze, and whippets.

Ketamine is chemically related to other dissociative anesthetics, including dextromethorphan (DXM), found in some over-the-counter cough syrups, and nitrous oxide (often called whippets ). Ketamine also shares a close chemical kinship to the prescriptives tiletamine and memantine. Tiletamine is used in combination with zolazepam as a veterinary anesthetic under the brand names Zoletic and Telazol. 

Ketamine belongs to the same family of drugs as dextromethorphan (DXM), which is found in some brands of over-the-counter cough symp nitrous oxide, better known as whippets, so named because of the metal whipped cream chargers the gas is commonly packaged in and phencyclidine (PCP), also known as angel dust.

This uncomplicated molecule (N2 O) was produced for the first time two centuries ago—in 1772—by the chemist and political refugee Sirjoseph Priestly. He was also the first person to isolate oxygen. As Priestly tried to determine whether dry carbon dioxide would dissolve iron, he prepared a gas that he named "Dephlogisticated Nitrous Air. He experimented with this gas, soon to be known as nitrous oxide, but never inhaled it. 

There is yet a small class of oxides, the neutral oxides, which do not belong to any of the classes before named they do not combine with water to form acids, nor do they neutralise acids. This class has tended steadily to decrease as chemical knowledge has extended. Carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, and nitric oxide were once mcluded m this class, but each of these can be obtained by the loss of the elements...
